beyond the surface.
Beyond the Surface is a short duet created for Hors Circuits – 30 Years and Beyond: New Faces at TROIS C-L | Maison pour la Danse / Banannefabrik. Developed as a 5-minute performance, the piece brings together extracts from two choreographic works created in 2019 and 2023, reimagined in dialogue. Through shared movement, shaking textures, and moments of stillness, the work explores themes of vulnerability, catharsis, and human interconnectedness. Beyond the Surface invites the audience to look past appearances and enter a space where emotional landscapes, inner states, and collective experience quietly resonate.
Choreographic Research & Structure
The duet is composed of two reimagined excerpts originating from Ecosystem Virus (2019) by Melina Bountzika and The Waves (2023) by Vita Stasolla. Originally developed as separate works, both materials were adapted and reshaped to function as a dialogue rather than a sequence. The choreography moves between shaking, tension, and release, allowing physical states to emerge organically and transform through interaction. The performers shift between moments of isolation and connection, creating a fluid structure that mirrors inner psychological processes.
Themes & Artistic Intention
At its core, Beyond the Surface explores vulnerability, catharsis, and interconnectedness. Drawing from ecological, emotional, and social metaphors, the piece reflects on how internal states are shaped by external conditions and shared environments. Shaking becomes both a symptom and a release, symbolizing instability, overload, and the body’s attempt to regain balance. Rather than offering resolution, the work invites the audience to sit with ambiguity and recognize the shared nature of human fragility beneath visible surfaces.
